Water Aerobics: The water aerobics program is designed to enhance all three aspects of fitness: muscular strength and endurance, aerobics and cardiovascular ability, and flexibility. Classes are performed in the pool where you can move your body through the water, creating resistance to firm and tone the muscles and to improve the efficiency of your cardiovascular system. This program is appropriate for all levels of fitness, swimming abilities and pregnant women.

Why Workout in the Water? Water is more resistant than air. The resistive qualities of water oppose your limbs as you push and pull them against its smooth pressure. At the speed you move your limbs through water in a typical workout, muscles become strengthened and toned in an even, balanced fashion. You therefore do not risk overworking some muscle groups and neglecting others - as all the muscles surrounding a limb are utilized.

Gravity relinquishes much of its hold in the water, acting as a cushion, protecting your weight-bearing joints and internal organs from jolting-ballistic impact. Water helps prevent your body from overheating. You breathe deeper, improving your lung capacity.

With a regular program of water aerobics, you become more flexible. You'll benefit from the bonus of improved agility, coordination, balance and posture. Athletes can reduce their injuries by cross-training with water workouts. People with arthritis or back, knee and other joint problems can increase their muscular strength and joint mobility while decreasing joint pain. Seniors will gain confidence from the improved support and balance. And those who are overweight will find they can move into this program with a minimum amount of risk.

Lap Swimming:

Masters Swim: A structured swim workout for adults. Come improve your speed, stamina and technique while having fun with other members of the Club. Any member of the Suburban Athletic Club who is age 19 years or older may participate. The workout is run by Aquatics Director, Ray Senechal, and the Assistant Aquatics Director, Justin Jackson.
